Q: What does the market say should be the price of Illustration/Design and graphical art services in the digital age? How do I license or buy original art?
A: I consult the yearly publication: The Graphic Artist Guild Pricing and Ethical Guidelines handbook . This is a great publication for both artists and art buyers and de-mystifies the process and provides examples of the most commonly used forms (Purchase orders, Artist/Illustrator Agreements, Licensing Agreements, Copyright law information. In this economy, the prices may still seem high. This book is only a guideline. Client and artist are free to negotiate any price for services. Ask me for free estimates on any job you may have in mind.
The Basic Work Flow (approx 3-5 days): Jobs can be very different. This is only an example.
- Contact me with a purchase order, e-mail, or other document you like using to request artwork and estimates. Please specify as best you can, what you need, where the artwork will be used and how long you will need to use the art. Specify if you would like to purchases the copyright on the artwork. *
- Meet with client to discuss terms/fees.
- Thumbnail phase: Approx 25-100 thumbnail drafts are prepared for the client.
- Meet with client: Top designs/colors chosen to continue working further.
- Tight Comprehensive phase: Tighter than a thumbnail draft but not a final. In the 'tight comp' phase the artisit continues developing several designs for each of the rough drafts chosen by the client.
Design & colors are locked in.
- Finals: Several print ready/web ready final images are delivered to the client (whatever file types you need. All work can be provided on CD/DVD ). Payments.
*The above assumes the job is 'Work for Hire' and based on the clients existing designs. Licensing original art & copyright purchase is available. Copyright can only be transferred in writing. www.copyright.gov/
